Before you can mentor

Any GT student can mentor--you don't need to be part of NSCS, so invite your friends, and you could mentor at the same time. All you need to get started is to get a background check from the Atlanta Department of Public Safety. Here's how:

  1. Get a money order for $10—many gas stations sell these and Publix does too. I got mine from Publix for $10.89.
  2. Go to the Atlanta Public Safety Office (15 min drive).
    1. Located at 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy, Atlanta 30331--(directions can be found at the bottom of this page--a 15 min drive).
    2. Phone number, in case you get lost, 404-546-4396.
    3. Go into the huge building, pass through metal detectors, go to 2nd floor to get background check. You'll fill out a form and wait for about 10 minutes to receive the check.
  3. Make a digital copy and email it to me.
  4. Keep the original background check and bring it with you on your first day of mentoring.
  5. Fill out a volunteer waiver--link--and return it to me.
  6. All set, ready to tutor!

Here are directions to the Public Safety Office--pretty much a straight shot from Tech.

Once you get your background check and have sent it to me, you'll need to decide on weekly times that you can mentor. See the next page "How to mentor."
